Re: Labour Party/government Watch
I am not in a position to have a strong opinion on the numbers involved. Hard to know who to believe. That's a fair position. My point is that Labour could go after much juicier assets than the squeezed middle class. A small wealth tax on multi millionaires and billionaires would be a much better o...

Re: Ukraine Watch...
The likely winner in any carve-up would be China. The prospect of this happening would presumably prompt the US to cross the Bering Straight and take a significant chunk of territory in the north-east. Agree UE. Plus, they might try and seize the oil fields in the north of Russia which will complem...

Re: Ukraine Watch...
I think that putin is probably bluffing and will not actually resort to nuclear weapons. If however he DOES use nukes, then the free world needs to consider what would be a suitable response. Some senior military figures are in favour of "doing a Dresden", this meaning a devastating respo...

Re: Ukraine Watch...
Putin formally updates Russian nuclear doctrine to allow nuclear response to non nuclear attack. This could go two ways. 1) Putin is not bluffing as he is probably dying and he couldn't give damn about Russians so could retaliate with nukes. That would mean Moscow and St Petersburg would be gone al...

Re: Coal
I bought another half ton of coal (anthracite) today. I couldn't help myself as it was on special offer . Saying that, I have a load of wood fuel ready, so hopefully shouldn't need to use it this year unless in an emergency

Re: Labour Party/government Watch
Indeed - very hard to see how Starmer's government is brought down. Blocking ports absolutely will not 'easily' bring him down. The absolute best the current protests can hope for is a delay and further consultation on the inheritance tax changes. But, note, the changes to inheritance tax is perfec...

Re: Labour Party/government Watch
I believe Starmer can deal with this sort of problem and come out of it stronger. Nothing can bring his government down. His majority is too big for that. Starmer's majority is large but the voter turnout was small, compared to the US election. The farmers could bring him down easily by blocking th...

Re: Subsea cable near Sweden cut
My take - cut all cables to Russia and tell the Germans to get their nuclear power plants going again to avoid using Russian gas. That won't happen as the Germans are wedded to burning Russian gas, which is not there anymore

Re: Labour Party/government Watch
No. What about if they block the ports, as some reports are suggesting? I remember when we had the fuel protests in 2000, which caused a ton of trouble, but Blair was in a much better position back then....... I believe Starmer can deal with this sort of problem and come out of it stronger. Nothing...
