Pretty much anything electronic emits emf.I'm sure she'll be ditching her pc, mobile phones, microwave, tv, radio etc right away.

I bet the reading from that laptop charger for the laptop she was using emitted 10 times what those cfl's emit...

Yes cost is the most important factor for most people. Even if you fill the average roof with 5% efficiency solar panels, you'd still get a worthwhile amount of power from them.

I wonder if the light actually works for more than ten seconds ? My tesco wind-up version is useless for the light, only lasts 10 - 15 seconds after about a minute of winding. The radio is very good though! It runs nicely off my Stirling generator though, which is a bonus 8)

Our drier uses an array of aluminium plates to condense the water, no water supply needed. Works well.

I never understood the need to jump red lights they should hardly slow any cyclist down anyway. I suppose you could argue that red lights only exist because of cars, if cars hadn't had been invented then neither would red lights, since cyclists pose virtually no danger to anyone but them-selves. I d...

They have to change the meters every two years if you've been with the same supplier. You could try switching, the new supplier won't change it for two years. If it were decided by the power co the meter would get changed once every 200 years, and you'd receive a massive back bill for 150 years elec...

I don't think connecting them in series will give you much (if any extra charging capabilities. Most decent panels are designed to charge on cloudy days by putting out considerably more voltage than is needed (12V panels put out around 21V). I think you'd be better off with them in parallel.

You can build a fairly simple system purely for backup fairly cheap. The simplest way would be a backup generator available from about £100 upwards (of dubious quality!). A simple low voltage system would be a large lead acid battery, like a car battery though a deep cycle battery is superior, and s...
