It also gets a mention in "The Trigger" by Arthur C. Clarke & Michael Kube McDowel from 1999.

Can anyone else think of a mainstream novel that mentions it?

Thanks Skeptic. I appreciate your support.
Having never been unemployed (I`ve worked since I was 14 or so, I`m now 31) it`s going to be a bit of a shock but I`m trying to stay positive!

Next stop.

You can`t help but feel a bit sorry for Obama and the enourmous clusterf**k he is inheriting.
Anyhow, looks like I might be about to join the 2.whatever million unemployed shortly (I work in retail  ). so right at this moment I`m past caring... off to get VERY drunk.

Happychicken/Ludwig I kind of agree with both of you in the sense that this is such a MAJOR problem that it needs mainstream acknowledgement, however, Ludwigs point is also very valid in that "what`s the point of telling people the problems when we know damn well there`s no soloution". As ...

PO gets more "mainstream"

Have a look at this... http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/oct/29/fossil-fuels-oil It`s getting less "fringe" by the day. The demand destruction is leading to a lack of investment in new infrastructure and exploration. Perhaps $60ish a barrel isn`t such a good thing... Peak oil may ...

True - in fact I think I'll just chuck my rubbish over next door's wall from now on, it's a lot less energy intensive than having to put the bin out on a Thursday.[/quote]

You only have to look in almost any ally in almost any town to see that this is already standard practice!

Surely the biggest problem is transporting all the waste to the processing plant.
Yopu can hardly build a pipeline to it so I guess it`s all going to be transported by lorry running on... (you guessed it!)

I`m not saying landfill is they way to go but this is no magic answer either.

RGR... I would agree that LATOC goes a long way towards defeating its own purpose with the nuttier side of things, however my point is that it will often lead to people exploring wether there really IS a problem. Often just googling Peak Oil is enough to make someone realise that a LOT of people are...

Rather envious... We`ve just got the usual (mock coal) gas fire :(

Bit of a concern, if we ALL go for woodburners where are the trees coming from. Peak wood (again)

DO want pics though...

RGR... We all know LATOC is on the extreme side, the whole point of this thread is just that.. it gets people reacting. Your recent replies are getting dangerously close to trolling which is a shame. On form you are an interesting person to debate with, when you are just insulting/ranting I find it ...

Hi Pani Kova You were Panicky Mum? I`ve seen some interesting posts from you... Powerswitch is a lifesaver. I now have a much more balanced outlook, although I do take a strange pleasure in reading some of the doomer stuff, I don`t subscribe to the Mad Max theory. That said, I do believe we are in f...

Inventories have oil, strategic stockpiles are full, the US is using so little gasoline nowadays we're exporting all our spare stuff RGR... I thought the US had been IMPORTING oil for years now as a result of its own peak in the 70`s and wanting to keep its own (admittedly large) reserves available...
