I think the word is spreading, but oh so slowly.

One of the main problems is that (almost) ALL the politicians simply will not acknowledge it or take any action on it for the simple reason that it would make them impossible to re-elect.

What??

I don't believe what I am reading here - maybe I missed something. Either that or I am waiting for RGR to come back and say "Fooled you, fooled you - of course there is no Peak Oil"

;)

Being on close, friendly terms with your neighbours, wherever you live, must surely rank top in necessary skills. That said, it happens more in the country than the town, having experienced both. Totally agree with that. Where I am there is a huge difference between just the local town, which is on...

Besides, what's "survival" anyway? It is thousands of years since (at least in the West) individual human beings lived in a completely self-sufficient way. WE ARE SOCIAL ANIMALS. I'm also not convinced that the "survival skills" of the average country person couldn't be picked u...

Country vs. City

Of course the country is better than the city - just so long as you are living in a real country community. I am :P I have read articles that suggested that cities are better than the country because that's where the food is!! The disconnect between going to the supermarket and picking up a frozen c...

Re: What if peak oil causes a BOOM not BUST?

Are the doomers still of the opinion that in such a scenario we will inevitably hit some other limit and crash anyway? That's not being doomerish, that's just the hard reality of arithmetic: # population is growing faster than food production # energy is being used faster than new resources are dev...

Re: Article on PO : Peak Oil – Supply data doesn&a

He claims the huge new fields in Brasil and additional capacity in Iraq would have no effect whatsoever on a proposed 4% decline rate. I'd like to know where? The last I read all these "huge" fields are just puddles. Tupi - 8bbls. etc., etc. Do the maths - that's 3 months of global supply...

Choosing a country

I chose Hungary when I wanted to up-sticks and leave the UK. Don't know a lot about the political system. Just that it doesn't bother me and I don't bother it. Lots of reasons for: Sound legal basis for owning property (goes back to the Hapsburgs) Plenty of cheap property with big plots of land avai...

Couldn't agree more - surely skills are the most transferable "pension" plan you can get. If you're indispensible to your community then surely they'll keep you alive  Would be nice, but many years ago I learned the lesson of "Nobody is indispensible". Surely far better to ...

Re: Land and stuff

Not to be a doomer, but have you looked at the price of land? While I was going through my "oh fnck what do I do now phase" a couple of years back that exact idea crossed my mind. There was a plot of land right across the street from my front door, more or less an acre from the size of it...

Land and stuff

My only plan is to get hold of a piece of land I can grow vegetables and keep chickens on. I cannot think of anything else constructive to prepare for the future because nobody knows what is going to happen, especially with respect to the global economic/financial system. Not to be a doomer, but ha...

Took a while, but also gave much opportunity for thought and response on a range of topics.

Thanks James :)

I don't think my Hungarian is up to writing to the local MP yet ;) I did meet him in person at the pig killing in the village though. In terms of the UK, I think that all you are getting is the same old, same old bullsh*t reply. Probably because, like pretty well all Western governments they either ...

None. I want a wood burning stove because it looks awesome, but it'll show those F-in ruskies who's boss if they cut the gas off again. I used mine only a few minutes ago. With the amount of burnable crap I have here heating water and cooking cost me nothing and will continue to do so for a long lo...
