Re: Ex cop asked to spy on XR

As well as sea levels rising, increasing rainfall is going to lower the land. I watch with dismay as the water running down the roads turns orange with clay when there is a downfall. Rivers turn orange / brown, ploughed land becomes strangely smooth and covered with stones, even the stone track to m...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

Just popped in to post this: https://sfist.com/2021/07/27/cdc-confirms-that-viral-loads-in-vaccinated-people-with-delta-are-indistinguishable-from-unvaccinated/ CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky cited unpublished data from recent days suggesting that vaccinated people may be able to spread the Del...

Re: Time article about the meteoric rise of /r/collapse

I've recently had a nagging feeling that collapse is imminent. It's unsettling. I'm a prepper at heart, have been for years, but always hoped that things would be OK. Now I feel a bit pessimistic, as if things are accelerating towards a crunch. I guess that many other people are feeling the same.

Re: Flood resistant domestic electrics.

There is a house for sale in Llechryd that floods so often that the estate agents listed "high level electrics" as a feature.

It's the grey stone house at the end of the bridge

I think it's flooded three times this year.

Re: Preparing for extreme heatwaves.

We enjoy Moroccan and Middle Eastern cookery, which makes use of tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, beetroot, mint, lemons, chick peas etc., along with fairly mild spices. This food certainly fits well in hot weather.

Here's a good explanation of the technologies.

Re: Renewables to replace our diesel genny

How does a PV system stack up as a "doomer" prep ? Even if not grid tied, is the life of the panels or batteries a concern ?

Re: Renewables to replace our diesel genny

VAWT are tried and tested, and although they are not reckoned to be as efficient as more popular designs they do have plus points. For example, they work near obstacles that cause wind to change direction frequently. I became interested in VAWT when I cut a hole in a hedge between two fields, the wi...

Re: Renewables to replace our diesel genny

Here's an off-the-wall idea to pick apart for fun. Why not a VAWT on top of the new building ? With the shaft feeding down into the building you could use it to pump water, drive machinery, or perhaps even to charge the car via the regenerative braking system if you could connect to it.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to find wood with tight growth rings that make the best musical instruments, climate change has changed the trees.

Or when deer have just eaten all the lettuces you planted in a border less than four metres from your living room window!! It won't be the shotgun which comes out though. I investigated the legality of this some years ago and you are allowed to kill deer with AAA 12g shotgun shells. Deer stalkers w...

Re: Preparing for extreme heatwaves.

In some places the electricity supply is already strained, adding electric car charging and electric water heating won't leave much spare for aircon. I wonder if we'll see people making more use of their cellars in years to come, as a comfortable midday retreat. Even my well insulated workshops are ...

Re: Preparing for extreme heatwaves.

Pretty sure I've posted this before, but it's useful. Some years ago in a hot country - Cyprus I think - I wandered into a back-street bar to get out of the heat, and the bar man offered up a plate of thickly sliced tomato with a sprinkling of salt on top. It made me feel a lot better.
