Re: OpenAI has just released an AI which has effective reasoning

Apparently the Middle East are looking to become major players in the future data centre game. It makes sense, they have enough fuel to run them. Bad news for global emissions though, and very bad news for Western governments if they can deny access at will.

How about a chemical toilet ? If the locality floods there's no guarantee the sewers will keep working.

We've been practising Lifeboat Ethics for ages. Every time we feed our pet dog and a child starves in the third world we make that choice.

UE, that's a very perceptive and realistic post, it reports exactly the opinions I have seen expressed by the BAU crowd.

Re: Heat pumps? Not so convinced now.

Great idea re electric chainsaw in summer. In fact any business involving power tools. I'm looking at fitting a 3 phase system to run my larger machinery You might think about an electric kiln too, the underfloor heating film I fitted to my seed benches in the poly tunnel is cheap to buy and easy to...

Good point Ken, the panels could act as extensions to a heat pumps low temp exchanger.

Re: I now believe AI has the potential to bring down civilisation

As an author you must find this worrying. It's not difficult to feed an AI your whole book, ask it to re-write it in a different style, substitute the photos for open licenced versions, and publish it. The detail is scary, in one report I saw is an analysis of how the Russia Ukraine conflict will af...

Re: I now believe AI has the potential to bring down civilisation

I have recently almost been misled by an AI. I searched online for statistics of harp sales, market research. I found a well written summary report predicting increased future sales, current sales, links to all the major manufacturers etc. Also, a link to allow me to buy the full report. Naturally, ...

Re: Heat watch

My seedlings have been bitten by frosts in May before. This year I have built insulated benches in my polytunnel, they have 25mm polystyrene base, a film heating element usually used for underfloor heating, ceramic tiles and the covered propagator / seed trays on top. The heating element is controll...

Re: How to pull up fence posts .. and remove U staples?

People using machinery need to understand that there may come a time in the future when that machinery will fall silent and work no longer and you are down to human muscle and ingenuity. That's a good point, older mechanical machinery is easier to maintain than today's electronically governed wizar...

I bought a rough terrain forklift, it's been very useful. Here's it with my home made fork extensions moving a 4 ton swiss lathe

Re: Losing the 'net

The BBC story seems to imply that the terrorists don't have the capability to cut the cables, I'm not convinced, if they can hijack a tanker and drag the anchor across the shallower parts of the route they have a good chance of damaging the link.

Re: Solar panel prices very low

It looks to me as if adding panels to an existing inverter that has spare capacity will have a payback period of less than a year. https://www.theecoexperts.co.uk/solar-panels/electricity-power-output#:~:text=A%20typical%20solar%20panel%20is,per%20year%20in%20the%20UK. Solar panel prices very low

Are they likely to go lower ? Or can we expect them to go up ?

Decent quality 415 watt panels, 12 year warranty, 25 year performance guarantee, are now under £70 each.

Worth stocking up or not ?
