I'm very confused about this so I have a thicko question:

I want to put a stove in place of an open fireplace, so there's a (1950s) brick flue there. Do I need to put a steel flue inside that?

Thanks.

I would expect petrol to store for many years in truly sealed containers, since nothing can get in or out, however this does not appear to be the prevailing view. No, I have stored petrol in containers and in a vehicle tank for long enough to make it come out like used engine oil. I have no idea why.

We also had a present truce, which we decided upon sometime early in December. The problem was I spent most of the month worrying that SWMBO didn't actually mean it and there'd be an awkward moment on Christmas Day...

Got away with it though :)

If fuel was not necessary for a lot of people, peak oil would be an irrelevance.

It's true that petrol is still cheap. It's also true that fuel protesters need to realise that it is a finite resource. However, the point which they are pretesting about is arguably valid. The fact is that fuel taxes are unfairly constructed so that when oil prices are high, the consumer gets a dou...

In addition to safety - other factors no included in the petrol vs train ticket comparison are the fixed costs of motoring which for an average car are just as much as the petrol. Of course you can't "save" them unless you give up the car totally. This creates a step effect, below say 400...

When I go for a trip (to London, the West country, or wherever) I often check the train fares. The result is invariably that I discover that fuel is amazingly cheap in comparison, so I go by car. I have a big petrol car, but then I also have a family of five. It's getting dearer, but it's still a ba...

Why not stock up now old chap? After the peak you will be able to send unsolicited smoke signal messages and trade the little blue pills for antibiotics or something. Let's face it, Viagra will be even more important to humankind if there's a population collapse and we need to keep the species going...

Thanks again people for all your help in pointing out reading matter, videos, etc. I have done a lot of reading up in the last few days. I have to say I am not 100% convinced. Please don't take that as an attack on your beliefs; far from it - Lord knows I'm a million miles from being expert enough t...

Absolutely.
Judging from The Idle Foundation you should fit in well here.
Good! In fact at least two of my friends from over there are also powerswitchers, which is how I found this site.

Fancy seeing you here Tracy! Nice to see you too; I feel at home already.

Sorry to storm in asking plonker questions but I now have lots of bedtime reading which I shall comb through and digest.

I am in Cambridge.

Where do I start?

Hello, first post from a newbie. I have seen media coverage of peak oil, but not a lot. It's one of those things that goes on very much peripherally; I don't reckon most people are aware of the details of the arguments and facts, me included. So here I am on this forum, there's loads of interesting ...
