Re: Reuse of dumped construction materials etc.

I wonder if such prices increases find a reflection in official inflation stats. No need to answer that.

Re: Are we on the brink of an electric car revolution?

Question (probably for adam2). What is the typical grid efficiency these days? That is, energy in for energy out? Losses from power station gate to end consumer are about 10% . No great accuracy may be claimed in this as there are several differing definitions of losses, and the actual losses are c...

Re: Are we on the brink of an electric car revolution?

Question (probably for adam2).

What is the typical grid efficiency these days? That is, energy in for energy out?

Also, how much of a full charge of a typical electric car does it take to carry its own batteries around?

Re: Growing problem of people in California stealing water

In some areas of the US, maybe all areas, water butts on downpipes are illegal! That would cause me problems if it ever came to pass in this country as most of my garden water comes from stored rainwater. I've added 8,000 litres of rainwater storage this year (we only had around 5,000) and I can se...

Re: Heat watch

Another week, another record high temperature. Highest ever temperature recorded in Northern Ireland. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-57875732 Only by a fairly small margin, but still a new record. It's unusual but probably not long-lasting. We've had several days of around 30ºC in t...

Re: New tax on sugar and salt proposed.

Graham McGregor was a guest on The Life Scientific talking about salt and the lives (and money) saved by salt reduction. Fascinating programme, look it up as a podcast. He reckons less than a gram of added salt per day is feasible. We use hardly any salt and notice straight away food that's got too ...

Re: Carry on flying, government green plan.

Good take on the government's 'plans' here. The infrastructure simply doesn’t exist to power fleets of battery-only electric cars; and nobody is planning to build the additional 700 charging stations per day in readiness for the ban on new ICE cars in 2030. Nor is anyone in a hurry to build the 20 a...

Re: Western N Ameria extreme weather forecast

Noting how this year has been notably calmer, weather-wise, in this area, I jokingly said to some acquaintances how the reduction in air traffic and the increase in wind turbine numbers have combined to reduce wind turbulence. I was taken seriously by a couple of people.

Yeah, they're a common scam and often extremely clever. I'm fairly cynical about many things, sometimes to my disadvantage (but not in this case).

Re: Looks like a potentially severe drought coming

Back on topic... https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000vckq/weather-for-the-week-ahead-24042021 No change. Still no rain in the long-term forecast, and northerly winds. Yeah, our second day of promised 'rain' (mizzle really) never materialised. So now we're at a month with no rain to speak of. ...
