Re: Ambri

Fair enough. I have to wonder where the energy comes from to maintain such high temperatures, with or without insulation. He’s talking 600/700 degrees.

It’s also one of those ‘too good to be true’ technologies. Cheap abundant materials, life measured in decades, easily recyclable.

He’s a good salesman, that’s for sure but what do you see as the technology’s main downfall?

Re: Data centres

More information is needed. Total load in Mw. What percentage of this will be from ON SITE PV. What percentage of this will be from on site natural gas generating plant. What is the expected efficiency of the proposed gas burning plant. What percentage of total demand will be met from the grid. Thi...

Re: Time article about the meteoric rise of /r/collapse

There have been two major changes in recent years in my view. Firstly society in general and many individuals have become far more reliant on electricity. In the 1970s power cuts most schools and most shops remained open as did many workplaces. These days almost everything would stop. Witness for e...

Data centres

In the light of climate change, what are powerswitichers' thoughts on the construction and running of data centres? One is planned upwind of me and it seems on first glance that the dominant source of power will be 18 on-site 'lean-burn' gas generators; I could be wrong as I haven't studied the prop...

Re: Wells and boreholes.

Using an unauthorised borehole, I'd say make sure you have plenty of rainwater storage to account for any well-watered vegetation that may help explain it. Some things have to be kept under your hat, so to speak.

Neither have I but my wife buys it for me. Do you think she's trying to tell me something?
That's for me to know and you to find out!

I had to chuckle at that as well :D

When did the collapse of complex societies hit you, Mr Murican? When the deodorant ran dry!
The poster chose a rather poor metaphor but you get what he's saying.

I've never bought any deodorant in my life so he can't blame me.

Re: Current Oil Price

For the majority, there's only so much money. What extra gets spent on fuel helps depress demand for fuel-related products.

Wells and boreholes.

I'm thinking of drilling a borehole, even though I'm on mains water, as a backup against mains failure or summers dry enough for my garden to need more water than I can afford to buy. Is that doomerish ? A bit too "prepper" ? Or just a reaction to a heatwave and lots of news about climate...
