Shared values require cultural winners and losers

there is no way this is going to unite the nation, because either way it's locking us into a direction of travel that for some people is going to be fundamentally opposed to their deepest values. Tess, I agree that there is less cohesion, and that this is a problem. Unfortunately it is hard to exam...

Every country is exceptional

British exceptionalism? (rofl) I'm not so much arguing exceptionalism for the UK, as exceptionalism for everybody. I once (when I was in my teens and early 20s) believed that all nations and peoples are essentially the same. With the benefit of a few decades of experience, and having lived, worked ...

Obstinacy

And yes it is partly because they don't understand internal British politics - they don't understand the level of support there would be for a government that was brave enough to go down the "no deal" path if the alternative is also pretty bad. Agreed. I think the EU elite fail to underst...

I've lost track of who is insulting who and for what here I popped into PowerSwitch this morning as I do once every year or so. Having skimmed this thread I can see you hit the nail on the head. It's just rant after rant, unsupported assertion after unsupported assertion, ad hominem attack after ad...

Spain never breached it, until very recently, whereas Germany pissed all over it during the mid 00's. With of course France being equally at fault, again in the early Noughties. The Anglo press pointed this out very loudly at the time. The considered and thoughtful response to this criticism by the...

I have heard that the mercury content of these is quite large. I broke one once and there was a cloud of white dust. If I break one now I will leave the room for at least half an hour For the cold cathode fluorescent lamps used in laptops the amount of mercury used is 5mg or less but I haven't hear...

Re: 80 per cent of bank lending 'went overseas'

Most of our economic growth over the last few years came from (or was funded by) the banking & credit bubble. It's only fair that we give back what we didn't earn, isn't it? Surely you're not referring to those poor innocent consumers who, by borrowing far more than they could repay to consume ...

The problems facing us are far bigger than a simple peaking in oil production, and cannot be wholly blamed on oil peaking. It always worries me when I find myself agreeing with people on this forum... I would modify that only slightly to say "nothing to do with oil peaking and everything to do...

So a comparison with Spain, who have both the energy source (wind) and the generating plant (wind turbines) isn't relevant.
But then Spain doesn't have any water, at least not the parts where most people live. And that's problematical...

CaRP - the Campaign for Real Pedantry  Nice - I'll have to remember that one. But... shouldn't that be CfRP? :? Heh, I appreciate your pedanticism. No, it should really be CAMRP as the original sig which I first saw circa 1991 on CiX was based on the Campaign for Real Ale -> CAMRA. Suss

Because thats the number that creates an equal number of willing buyers and willing sellers. '...more sellers than buyers' is the usual pithy reply. It is indeed, and although it's completely inaccurate it conveys the truth of the matter well enough :) Not trying to be clever BTW, somebody wondered...

I was thinking more of the other end of the Teifi. I spent a month in the summer around Cardigan, and there seems to be quite a bit happening. But it's a long way from the rest of the country if I need to get there, and maybe not so good if I need to earn money. Agree with the latter point. Cardiga...

Remote from what? Everything you wanted to leave behind in the first place? Seriously, if you want to be in the thick of things you need to be somewhere completely different. Carmarthenshire isn't exactly buzzing!

Only half an acre, but it'll take us a while to use that. It's all rather overgrown at the moment. I'm gonna see if I can get involved in the adjacent woodland - i understand our new neighbours to one side manage it, while it's owned by other neighbours down the road ... The property is near Carmar...
