Eco-heating options - pros & cons

Hello I have recently bought a big old house in Cardiff. It needs lots of renovation and currently has no central heating, which to me is an opportunity to do something energy-saving. I've had a regular plumber quote for a regular gas central heating system and an eco-plumber quote for various optio...

Hmmm

Thinking about it.

The Irish economy seems to crashing pretty fast.

Then again, if this means an influx of cash into their economy and the EU don't stop them, I may move my savings over there.

Post Office Savings is owned by one of the Irish banks, isn't it?

There is no next one planned at the moment. The initiating group needs new blood - fancy helping organise things? I was up at Easton Community Allotment on Sunday and spoke to them. We may decide to hold a workday/meeting there one Sunday a month. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, if you fancy ...

Should I get my savings out of Sterling?

Is the UK's economic prognosis in fact worse than that for the US and that of the £ worse than that of the $? Sterling has noticeably be falling against the dollar recently and even worse against the Euro (over 8% in the last month alone). The UK's balance of payments deficit has been widening spect...

Earlier this year I put money into Euros, commodities (HSBC), extraction (JPMorgan), ethical (Jupiter) and renewables (Triodos). It's a bit early to say whether it was worth the effort rather than just keeping the money in cash. The Jupiter Ecology fund has started to go down. I think (hope) the gov...

Yep. I'm off to Ken Neal's Sat.

So is on for the Watershed bar Friday night.

8.30pm suits me better because I've got to get back from Surrey and grab something to eat first.

Gold may perform well in the volatile world of commodity markets. As for arguments along the lines of gold being true or honest money or being a historically constant medium of exchange - any medium of exchange only has the value that people collectively agree it has. If no one accepts my cash, it's...

I'm a Darwinian Malthusian doomer.

Why proselytise when there's simply not going to be enough land/resources for everyone to survive/have their "fair" share in a post-oil future. May those who are most foresighted and adaptable survive.

I'm right-handed but I always wipe my bum with my left hand. I'm not a Muslim. I didn't know about that tradition when growing up. It just seemed to happen naturally. Is this inherent in the normal wiring of a right-handed brain? What are other people's experiences? Do left-handers wipe their bums w...

It had been my belief that the scrunters wouldn't recognise vegetables as food because they don't resemble pizzas or burgers and they have no idea how to cook them, so I thought the idea of marauding gangs stealing your carrots unlikely...obviously I was wrong.

I read a lot of articles in the process of selecting the stories to put on the news pages of this site. A year ago it was only really bloggers and alternative news sites mentioning Peak Oil. However, since oil broke $100 a barrel, the early peak theory is getting more mentions in the pages of the UK...
