Re: Conservative government watch
Agreed, if the conservatives lose either of those seats they might as well just close the party down. I think the tory party might need to split. The current internal warfare isn't just the result of the unprofessionalism of Johnson and incompetence of Truss. There are fundamental ideological diffe...

UBI trial in England
It's all over the media - 30 people to be paid £1600 a month for 2 years and be monitored to see how this affects them during this time. It seems to have totally decided the public and experts alike, but not along the lines you'd think. What does everyone think on here? I can see merits for both for...

Re: Ukraine Watch...
I'm wondering if the apparent sudden uptick in supply of more advanced weaponry to Ukraine is to try and get the war more or less concluded as soon as possible to avoid any issues with ongoing support from the US should Chump get elected.

Re: Extinction Rebellion, ongoing disscussion.
There was something on Australian TV about a climate change protest interrupting a snooker match by pouring some kind of dust on the green baize. Yes it was Just Stop Oil behind the protest at the snooker. Apparently snooker is an extremally carbon intensive sport (I guess if the participants are j...

Is BBC News melting down?
I turned over to BBC2 this morning, and was met with a live broadcast for Radio 5 Live, which was just a phone in segment. I changed over to the actual BBC News channel, and the same was on there until 12.00, when the news appeared to return. Also, it seems that we've been getting more looped storie...

I thought this was funny: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11893557/Video-claiming-Putin-using-body-doubles-goes-viral-Russia-bizarre-theory-gains-momentum.html Yeah, it's the Daily Mail, but thought it quite amusing, especially this bit: And a former Putin speechwriter Abbas Gallyamov warne...

Re: Bank Watch ...
Is this The Big One ? No. The Big One will happen when China backs the Renminbi with gold. Although it is less clear which will be the cause and which the effect. China has massive problems backing the renminbi with gold. The rnb is no more a reserve currency than the USD. China's currency is no mo...

Re: Budget March 2023.
And the really big one, pension reform. Pension changes will cost £800m a year. That's a huge £800m of public money going to the very rich, those able to pay £60k a year into their pension and amass pension pots well over £1 million. Of all the folk deserving of public money only a Tory would targe...

Re: Chinese "Weather Balloon"
I think that the craft in your picture is a Hybrid Air Vehicle, BDU? If so, I believe that Iron Maiden front man Bruce Dickinson had a major stake in the company building these. I seem to remember that one of these crashed while carrying out a test flight in Kent.....

Re: Chinese "Weather Balloon"
The response from the US Air Force is a bit odd. First they said it's 'an octagonal structure with strings attached', then they're saying 'it's a balloon inside a structure', and then finally they're saying 'we're not ruling out whether it's of extraterrestrial origin'. Maybe it's the Chinese have g...

Re: chatGPT and its cousins are the way of the future ...
Google has now thrown it's hat into the ring with it's AI offering, Bard. It'll be interesting to see how this shapes up against chatGPT. I've been playing around with DALL.E and it really can produce some quite good art, especially if you're a fan of pop art. I can see this putting paid to companie...

Here's the Express's view of the Truss situation (yeah I know): https://www.express.co.uk/comment/expresscomment/1731106/Liz-Truss-comeback-tory-party-latest-news-uk-politics-supply-side-economics I liked this bit: While real business people like me welcomed Truss’s strategy, it was the markets whic...

Re: Chinese "Weather Balloon"
Chinese 'spy' balloon has now been popped by an F22 fighter jet launching an AIM 9 Sidewinder missile. Seems a bit dramatic given the fact that the balloon was at an altitude of around 60000 feet, so could have been popped by a surface to air missile. Speaking to some American friends, China has app...
