Re: "Two dead in attack on oil tanker"

Israel have blamed this attack on "Iranian terrorism" The ship is operated by a London based company that is owned by an Israeli businessman. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-57977702 Note "operated by" and not "owned by". Some reports state that the ship is...

Re: How Bitcoin's vast energy use could burst its bubble

Bitcoin "mining" does, so far as I know, produce a small but known reward for a finite amount of effort, which means computer processing power and electricity consumption. This is not directly comparable to actual physical mining for say gold. A gold miner could expend a lot of effort and ...

Re: "Two dead in attack on oil tanker"

Slightly later reports on other media suggest that this was attempted piracy, and that the pirates were defeated though at the cost of two lives.
One of the dead is reported to be a UK citizen employed as a security agent against pirates.

Re: Greater Manchester publishes Clean Air Plan

Yes a step in the right direction, but a small step.
No reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, only an improvement in local air quality.

There might be an increase in carbon dioxide emissions as drivers of polluting vehicles take a longer route in order to avoid the clean air zone.

Re: Renewables to replace our diesel genny

If you fear that a wind turbine is going to suffer "non passive failure" then I suggest RLF, which may be politely translated as "run away very quickly".

I have only seen a non passive failure twice, both were home made. One caught fire and the other shed the blades.

And only slightly O/T, but why is a spectacular rise in almost anything often called "meteoric" Meteorites fall from the sky, not rise.

Re: Time article about the meteoric rise of /r/collapse

For many years on these forums and elsewhere, around December, I USED to forecast that the next year would be "very similar to the last year, but a bit worse" Such predictions were generally correct.
The astute member may have observed that I made no such predictions recently.

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

Driving an HGV requires proper training but can be learnt by anyone of normal physical and mental capabilities. Basic literacy and numeracy are required, but no significant academic education is needed. So to claim that we need more migrants to drive trucks is daft. Train more brits to do the work. ...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-scotland-57991442 Not a future proposal, but an actually existing machine that is generating a useful 2 Mw of power. The economics are doubtful at present, but that was once true of wind and solar. This is a floating machine, not a fixed barrage. Possibly an obstruc...

Re: Propane shortage ?

The propane bottle shortage is ongoing, though less serious with warm weather. Most suppliers of LPG will only supply existing customers. There is a thriving market in EMPTY LPG cylinders, as many suppliers will only offer exchanges, not new cylinders. Bulk propane for filling fixed tanks seems read...

The question is being asked, could shipping cope of satellites were attacked or subverted. I would HOPE that British ships still carry sextants, paper charts, nautical almanacs, mechanical chronometers, and direct reading magnetic compasses. And that the officers still know how to navigate without m...

A later report is here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-middle-east-57988693 Shortages of water now general, as it is often pumped electrically, or by diesel engines. Fuel for private generating plant now scarce and expensive. Diesel fuel is only available for hard currency, not for the almost wo...

Flood resistant domestic electrics.

Some years ago, I designed the electrical installation for a house vulnerable to flooding. This has again proved its worth in the recent flooding. All downstairs lights are ceiling mounted and controlled by pull cord switches as used in a bathroom. Downstairs socket outlets are of the 16 amp "c...
