Re: Brexit Watch

Electrical interconnectors between any nations within a reasonable distance are IMHO a good thing. They give the flexibility to obtain extra supplies at time of crisis or emergency, and to import or export power as required. What is NOT a good thing is to become a significant net importer of electri...

Re: Hitachi new trains fiasco.

The kits came from japan, for assembly in the UK, this allowed HMG to trumpet "a return of train building to the UK" Some of the welding was done in japan, some in the UK. Today four of the new trains have returned to service, not after any repairs, but after the cracks to be acceptable, s...

Re: Hitachi new trains fiasco.

I "never thought much of them" for several reasons. No buffet car, a facility that should in my view be provided on all long distance trains. Often too short. Most of the fleet are 5 car with only a minority of 9 car. Hard and uncomfortable seats. Noise and vibration from underfloor engine...

Re: Hitachi new trains fiasco.

Zero new GWR trains in use today. Advice not to travel remains.
The daily update from GWR now admits that disruption "could continue for several days" A change from the previous announcements that stated that "disruption could continue into the next day"

Re: Hitachi new trains fiasco.

The cracked parts are aluminium, which is very challenging to weld. I can do basic electric "farm welding" of mild steel as can many people, but would not consider auminium welding.

Re: Hitachi new trains fiasco.

No improvement, only two out of about 80 new GWR trains available today. Advice not to travel on long distance GWR services remains. GWR are looking for replacement trains but so far have only located three AFAIK. The official line in press releases and statements seems to be that trains "can b...

And some bodies that have been partially cremated are also washing up .
"Partial" cremation results from use of insufficient wood for a fierce, and all consuming fire, or from heavy rain during cremation.

Re: Flywheel generators for car chargers

I saw a photo of a remote car charging point with a large diesel generator feeding it. That would be our situation in effect so until cheap, fast, local charging is available we will be using petrol and diesel engines in this household I'm afraid. Under present circumstances I agree that petrol or ...

Re: One for Adam2

There is NO GAIN WHATSOEVER in improving power factor of domestic electricity supplies in the UK or the USA or most other places.
And in any case these units are much too small to have any significant effect.

Re: US watch

Indeed, and a bit surprising that this has not received more publicity.
Oil products can of course be shipped by road or rail instead of via the pipeline, but the volumes involved will be a challenge.

Re: Hitachi new trains fiasco.

Tomorrow, THREE of the new trains are expected to be available, out of a total fleet of about 78.

A rather bad taste joke is circulating about "an emergency delivery of swords to hitachi UK headquarters, for falling on"

Re: Flywheel generators for car chargers

Unlikely IMHO. A flywheel to store enough energy is a relatively costly item and a large grid connection might be cheaper, and will certainly be more efficient. And remember that a flywheel does NOT reduce the average energy demand. If a filing station is to charge 100 vehicles an hour, each one of ...
