I'd be interested to see figures on what percentage of each country's population works in agriculture. I think that would tell alot about a countries way of life, values and society. I can't find the reference now - I think it was a post on this forum about a year ago - but I have lodged in my mind...

Re: Chainsaw advice

I'm at the same stage as you - for me, the next step is the NPTC basic maintenance and operation course. Make and size will come after that, because I'll probably be using other people's kit as well. I've seen country boys operate above head height fag in mouth, swing-arm starts, cutting on the floo...

You would think they would all be running away to New Zealand or Russia or something. Queen Mary and a couple of other superliners in the middle of a Carrier battlegroup. At 10% occupancy those things could reprovision from any non-nuclear state via a small expeditionary force, then stand offshore ...

Note 'rotation' - you won't want to put more than a quarter of your land to wheat at one time under decent organic system. You might get away with half for a while, but you'll be running down your soil faster than you can replenish it over a number of years. Couldn't you alternate it with beans and...

Hence cork. I figured it would pop before the sidewalls of the cooker. In fact, it acted more as a second gasket, but was still more efficient than a closed pan.

Re: Pressure cooking, anyone?

I've used one with a cork gasket trimmed to fit and wedged in place with a cocktail stick. Still worked. I would think any scrap of rubber with a small screw would probably work for the escape valve. Suprised ppl don't think you could use them over a wood fire... they'd take longer but once they're ...

Kenneal, thanks for the info.

Would you recommend something like playground sand as better for a filter?

My plans are based on increasingly extreme climate, so the weather we've been having will lull us into a sense of security before the gulf stream goes N next year and gives us a bad drought ;-)

Re: Water filtration

Rainwater diversion still in the planning stage, along with the pair of trousers with one leg inside the other (not worn, obviously) for prefiltering. But I have acquired the Pocket Katadyn filter. Hopefully I can pass it on to the next generation almost unused, given it has a 20(!) year warranty, u...

Sorry, those figures won't work. We have about 90% of cropland under intensive ag. Without phosphates (hitting peak phosphates worldwide, subjected to hubbert linearisation model over on The Oildrum) and gas-intensive nitrogen fertiliser production, you're left with soil that will produce the square...

In the ancient world the problem of too much debt was easy to fix; they just cancelled it all. I don?t really see debt as a major problem. Money appears out of thin air and has no intrinsic value in itself so debt has no real meaning. Unless you foresee a general debt forgiveness happening (and the...

Right, didn't get the flippin' job in Notts, so am still JonB in Rugby. :( :( :( So, still 35 mile drive to the job. Looking at oil hitting highs and what Petroleum review are saying, I'm not hanging around for another job that I won't get and will crack on with the house. Will think more about wor...

Round parts of Ireland there are farmhouses that have never been left unattended. Okay perhaps this is a memory of a discussion that I overheard while a child so the information could be dated - but some communities change slowly and I would not be surprised if this were still true. I can believe i...
