Re: New coronavirus in/from China

The health impacts of cases and hospitalisations is less that last year, however every new case provides an opportunity for mutation. If we play this game long enough a strain will emerge to defeat the vaccines.

Re: Are we on the brink of an electric car revolution?

The cockpit looks like the deck of a space craft but apparently has no warp control! Indeed, this extra, unnecessary technology is what puts me off the current crop of EVs. I'd like something super simple, utilitarian, less to go wrong, less expensive etc. EVs have the very real potential to be sig...

Re: Heat watch

Phoenix, population 1.6 million and Las Vegas of 0.6 million hit both hit 46C today. Humidity around 10%. Night minimums are around 28-30 degrees. Phoenix has a 10 day forecast of similar mid 40s. Unsurprisingly, the 10 day forecast has ~zero rainfall over CA, AZ, NV and UT. The whole south west of ...

Re: Labour Party Watch

Agreed, I don't think Labour should keep Starmer 'til the next election but the Labour Party is looking impossible for anyone to unite, even against Johnson's clusterfuck of an administration. Who'd want the job, who could do it?

Re: Reports of incident at Chinese reactor

This is the new EPR, same as Hinkley C. The Chinese have managed to build, quickly and within budget what France and Finland have so far failed to do. Peak oil enters the chat, *waves*.

Of all the things the future may hold that's one of the least likely.

Re: Swiss voters reject key climate change measures

I'm impressed and surprised it was as close as that. There is a massive 'democratic deficit' waiting to emerge with respect to recent grand Net Zero plans announced by various governments. The Tory government absolutely do not have a popular mandate for the changes needed for the UK to be Net Zero b...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

The talk about 21st June is weird, the situation we're is now is not *lockdown*, restrictions are minimal and virus spread is exponential.

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

Not all hospitalisations are the same, unless already very ill the under 40s basically don't turn up in ITU. Just O2 and steroids are sufficient in the vast majority of young hospitalisations.

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

It's a interesting situation to model, the race between vaccine and virus spread, and the age sensitivity of the illness. I have a hard time believing we're going to be seeing 10s thousands of under 40s in hospital.

Re: Rolls Royce plans 16 mini-nuclear plants for UK

Just to cover all the based, China has approved construction of a small modular reactor. The construction of a demonstration ACP100 small modular reactor (SMR) at Changjiang in Hainan province has been approved by China's National Development and Reform Commission. The multi-purpose 125 MWe pressuri...

Re: Rolls Royce plans 16 mini-nuclear plants for UK

Another thought on Chinese nuclear competency. Firstly, the EPR reactors which a western academic described as 'unconstrutable', is both massively over budget and time in Flamanville (2007-) and Olkiluoto (2005-). However, the Chinese also built one, considerably faster and cheaper 2009-2018 for rea...

Nice idea but EVERY decision maker still be fully briefed on the geography irrespective of its common name. It won't have any impact on policy but it might discourage casual racism.

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

Numbers are too low to know the impact on the fully vaccinated, or on death rates, but if it wasn't for the vaccines we would be heading into full lockdown and NHS meltdown right about now. It's vital we minimises export of this variant to countries less vaccinated than UK... while maximising the e...
