Our transport is heavily oil-based. What are the alternatives?

Uber London Licence revoked, reinstated, revoked,

Post by raspberry-blower »

Uber, the app that mistakenly thinks it's a business and has been frantically attempting to stop losing money hand over fist today suffered a major setback.

LBC: TFL confirm that Uber licence will not be renewed
And today, TfL announced they will not renew their licence, following mounting problems from regulators around the world as well as a string of internal problems.

This does not mean that Uber cabs will disappear from London's roads, as the company are set to appeal the decision
I wonder how many other cities will follow London's lead?

If Uber is unsuccessful in its appeal it may well signal the end of its operations in Europe - at least - in its current guise. It may well go under completely.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools - Douglas Adams.

They'll appeal successfully. All it'll take is money in the right places.

The appeal is likely to succeed with minor concessions. This is just a stepping stone to fully automated taxi services in big cities. The conventional taxi business doesn't have more than a decade left to run.

Uber are an organisation that I personally boycott because of their lack of ethics. I have never travelled in a car booked via Uber and intend to maintain that position. Our local private hire companies have apps which make things much better because the control room can no longer lie to you.

What will happen in London is unclear it depends on the technicalities of the licence refusal. I remain concerned about the need for government to respond to changes in the economy as a result of automation.

If Uber does get relicensed it could spell the end of the black cab and "the Knowledge." That would be a shame.

A shame, maybe, but wholly inevitable. 'AI' has already rendered "the knowledge" largely irrelevant.

It isn't really AI, but just path finding and Satnavs.

Ha, that's what people says about ~every achievement of AI. It was said that a computer would never beat a human at chess as it requires imagination, creativity... then when computers did folk just said that wasn't 'AI'.

'AI' is an ensemble of different technologies. All of which you could rightly describe as "just x y z", that doesn't stop today's narrow AI systems outperforming our general intelligence at an increasing number of tasks.

You were correct.
The appeal HAS succeeded with minor concessions.
The licence has been renewed for a 15 month probationary period.
