Conservative party/opposition watch

What can we do to change the minds of decision makers and people in general to actually do something about preparing for the forthcoming economic/energy crises (the ones after this one!)?

The press doesn't require any mandate. Their job is to sell newspapers.

Do you mean Nadine Dorries? Born in poverty in Liverpool, became a nurse, started a successful company, successful author, Member of Parliament, then a cabinet minister.

Would you consider your life as successful?

Agree, there should be a new system of funding for politics, would stop blatant corruption like this,

So why are they given exclusive access to politicians. How can you and I hold the gov' to account when only 'selected' journo's get to ask our questions?

If they mandate is to sell newspapers, give them the same access as you or I. They are performing a constitutional role at the mo' with zero accountability.

Except it’s anti-democratic. If he is replaced in a coup, then they will be stealing his 80 seat super majority. Democracy thieves.
All Parties replace their leader when they've outlived their usefulness.
Sometimes it comes after a bad election defeat, but often it's about other things.
Very few go on their own terms - I doubt that replacing BoJo will result in a GE.
The Tories will still have their 78 seat majority, unless any more defect.

You're just p*ssed off because BoJo reflects your own views/values.

This is the Nadine Dorries who, two days ago in a live interview, uttered the words "The Prime Minister does not lie."

Seriously. Everyone in the UK knows that the Prime Minister is a liar. He has been sacked from three jobs for lying, and has repeatedly lied to parliament about the lockdown parties. Which means Dorries herself is either unbelievably stupid, or as big a liar as the Prime Minister. My bet is on both.

Except that we didn't vote for Boris, unless we lived in Uxbridge, we voted for a candidate for a particular political party. The MPs of the winning party vote for their leader.

The PMship is in the hands of the MPs of the party in power so they are not stealing anything if they vote Boris out in this case.

Otherwise I agree with most of what you say, Stu.

More tripe Stumuz - you can ask your MP anything by writing or e-mailing or attending a surgery...

Yes, journalists are effectively asking Qs on our behalf, but HMG chooses which ones to take/answer at their Press Conferences, so they have an element of control. They also choose which media outlets they want to be interviewed on - I've lost count how many times they say on Newsnight that they asked the government for a response, but were declined... But they're not shy to brief their favourite 'tame' Journo, when they want to get their message out...., and remember, most newspapers are generally sympathetic to the Tories...

If it's all the fault of the Press, why doesn't BoJo follow his role model Trump and resort to Twitter....?

Two people have been arrested amid clashes as protesters surrounded Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

Sir Keir was protected by police and removed by car near Parliament shortly after 17:00 GMT on Monday, having been surrounded by a group of demonstrators.

One person was heard to heckle Sir Keir, shouting: "Jimmy Savile."

It led some Tory MPs and party figures to urge Boris Johnson to withdraw his false claim linking Sir Keir to the failure to prosecute Savile.
This is unbelievably damaging for Boris Johnson, even on top of everything that has already happened. He came out with a ludicrous slur against Starmer, under the protection of parliamentary privilege, for which nobody in his party was willing to defend, and now the result is that the leader of the opposition is being attacked by members of the public who believed the lies. This is exactly the sort of thing we've come to associate with Donald Trump, and it surely kills Johnson stone dead. He still hasn't withdrawn the claim. This situation is absolutely awful, and 100% self-inflicted.

You are correct constitutionally Ken, but listening to my local MP who took the seat from Labour, she attributes her success to the 'Boris bounce'
at the last election.
I'm sticking with my point about democratic thievery of the first order. :D

How confident are you? I think it's even odds, 50% he'll be out (or process underway) before local elections in May and 80% chance he'll be out by summer recess. I'd also say ~0% chance he'll be leader at next general election.

Soon, if not already, the party will be prioritising the next GE, what's the best timing for the new leader? Not too soon or too late.

I think he'll be gone by the end of this week. This is going to finish him off.

No 10 has no intention of apologising for the PM's false claim that Sir Keir Starmer failed to prosecute Jimmy Savile, after the Labour leader was targeted by protesters near Parliament.

Boris Johnson is facing fresh calls from Tory MPs to say sorry, after protesters were heard shouting about the sex offender, as well as protesting about Covid measures.

But a senior source told the BBC: "He's got other stuff to get on with today."
There is absolutely no way he can get away with this. He's told blatant lies about the leader of the opposition, resulting in physical harrassment, and now he won't retract it. If he thinks he can survive that then he's lost contact with reality. And so have you.
