A small nuclear fission reactor for research purposes, with a thermal power output of about 1Mw, no electricity is produced, this reactor is purely for research purposes.
Unlike in a power station reactor, the core and the control rods may be seen operating. The reactor is immersed in a deep tank of water which shields the operators from dangerous doses of radiation, whilst permitting of a good view.
The blue glow of Cherenkov radiation may be clearly seen, this continues after the control rods are inserted as some radioactive decay continues.
Also rising bubbles of hydrogen and oxygen as the intense radiation breaks up water into its constituents.
