question for adam2: wth are these?

A con trick.
The box MAY do nothing useful whatsoever.
It is implied that the power factor is improved, but firstly how does the device "know" what the existing power factor is ?
Secondly, a box that small and connected via a 15 amp 120 volt plug cannot make much impression on the power factor of a 50KW load as is implied.
And finally domestic electricity metering in the USA and also in the UK measures true KWH and not KVAH so there is no discernible gain in improving the power factor of domestic loads.

It is regrettable but understandable that sheeple buy these devices. What is more worrying is that large public sector organisations buy them.
Use in Schools is particularly worrying in that it gives children and their parents a belief that they work.
