Thorium Based nuclear power...

This is apparently three times more abundant than uranium, Could this soften the blow as we slide into a low energy future?

Can existing reactors use this as fuel?

Although some work has evidently been done on this more work is needed for commercial applications. I think the argument has been made before; why spend the time and energy we have now on another source of energy that is not renewable? Should we not be spending our time developing sources that are renewable?
