Actually there are now more licensed firearms in the UK than there were back in the Pre-Dunblane days.
No handguns but lots of multi shot shotguns, pump and semi auto.
A large proliferation of .22 semi auto rifles, the assault rifle style is currently very popular.
Most deer rifles are scoped .243 bolt actions, quite a few thousand of those about. Then plenty of .223 licensed for fox and target shooting. Also a huge amount of .308 rifles for long range target shooting and deer culling.
I know people who own 20-30 rifles legally.
A rifleman is a citizen, not a subject.

Hey up - dont want to speak out of turn or what I know 'nowt about... but...

Not everybody in the uk with a firearm is a 'good ole boy' shooting eveything that moves for fun.

I really don't get how townies can comment on countryside management and game hunting in such a negative way. All meat is packed in plastic yea?

I have only been on a couple of shoots - it's not really my bag, but I have been invited to help. The farmer was losing a lot of crop to hare and rabbit. About 20 of us went out beating and shooting. Not one killed animal was wasted. It all ended up in the community pot, so to speak.

Huntsmen even let game flee - I saw one case where a hare was caught in a corner of a field and the head gamesman called ' no shoot' to let it hop over and away.

Similarly I saw whole families of rabbits let go to live another day. This is management, not anhialation.

Sorry if people dont agree with game hunting, but it is the way of nature. I dont agree with blood sports as such, but do agree with this.... the natural hunt for food and crop protection.

I may have a squirrel that someone is welcome to put in the pot. It's not doing my trees much good. I say may, because there was one splattered on the road the other day.

There was some figures on the recent report that came out after the White Haven shooting. Most accurate info will come form the police, but as each force administers their license holders differently I'm not sure if there is a central database anywhere.

Actually I'm surprised we got off on a gun tack with this thread and stayed with it this long. I thought my suggestion to tax wasted energy would generate a lively discussion about how to measure waste and assess the tax but that hasn't raised an eyebrow.

No! That wouldn't get anywhere. It's an anti growth measure and should be resisted.

There was a thread some time ago about the amount of energy wasted by vehicles which was quite interesting; don't know if anything came of any research but surely, a car must rank quite low on the scale of efficient movers of bodies.
