You people are all way off the mark, note that no wreckage has been found only some oil on the surface, and as we all know (thanks to our good friend from the USA, RGR) the world is awash with oil so this means nothing. The aircraft was in fact flying in the vicinity of an uncharted island which pops up in different places throughout the Atlantic from time to time, when an electromagnetic event occurred that affected the aircrafts controls causing it to crash land on the island. Even now the survivors are fighting against a mysterious group living in what's left of the Karma initiative's buildings. Unfortunately due to the unusual nature of the island they may now be living 30 years ago.

I think it's down to the Bermuda Triangle. I know it happened thousands of miles away from that area but that problem's never stopped Charles Berlitz before.

This seems most likely to me. Be wary of any wreckage being found - it's probably been placed there by a company called Widmore to hide the truth.

And if 6 of the passengers turn up alive, be aware that the one pretending to have given birth on the island is lying.

Also consider the flight number AF447. When decoded we clearly see that:
447 is equivalent to 4, 8 (4+4), 15 (4+4+7), 16 (4*4), 23 (4*4+7). And if we decode A=1 and F=6, then we also have the final number 42 (1*6*4/4*7).
