Glyphosate isn't that toxic afterall!!
It turns out that Glyphosate (G) isn't that toxic after all! The great Prof. Gilles-Eric Séralini has found that it isn't the G in Roundup and other G based herbicides that are dangerous to plants and you and I but the undeclared petroleum based additives and heavy metals, including arsenic and chromium, which are in all the G based products. G isn't the active ingredient, it's all the other highly toxic chemicals that are included. Monsanto have been conning the agricultural industry and the regulators for years using G as a smokescreen to cover all the other, already banned in many cases, crap that is included in the formulation.

In view of the above, is it any surprise that he also found this problem in rats?

That's shocking, I wonder if we'll see it in the mainstream news?

The title for this topic is misleading. Almost worthy of MSM. Is “Permaculture the right forum for it anyway?
Glyphosate is an antibiotic, how good is that? Antibiotics arguably don't necessarily poison you, but they muck up many of your life processes.
Glyphosate may not be the only problem in Round-Up style herbicides, nevertheless it contributes to the overall problem in a significant way.

But glyphosate is safer than a cup of coffee if you believe these truth twisters with a vested interest. The facts

There is a suggestion in the video that MRSA and C. Diff may be exacerbated by glyphosate, but there is evidence that suggests C. Diff at least has increased since 2000 concident with a cheaper method of producing Trehalose, a disaccaride artificial sweetener. C.Diff can grow quickly in the presence of low concentrations of Trehalose, and it has been added to the food supply since 2000. This just illustrates the problem of defining which chemical is causing any specified problem. Trehalose and C.DiffRoundup contains many other toxic chemicals which, when mixed together are 1000 times more toxic than glyphosate on its own

The regulators have been going on what Monsanto has told them and, according to the paper, the rest of the formulation has been a trade secret which has not been revealed to the regulator or anyone else. Until the formulation was tested by someone it would not be known.PS_RalphW wrote:Since arsenic and chromium can easily be measured at the parts per billion level by a very ordinary mass spectrometer, I find it unlikely to have got passed the regulators this many years.

I said "isn't that toxic" rather than isn't toxic at all. Yes glyphosate is toxic but Roundup would be toxic even if the glyphosate wasn't there! And yes there are still problems with glyphosate but not, possibly, as many as with the rest of the chemicals in the formulation as shown in your quote below.woodburner wrote:The title for this topic is misleading. It was a toss up as to whether this should go into News or Permaculture and I chose here as it is about growing using natural processes and the paper quoted very much supports the use of natural processes rather than spreading toxins all over the countryside. If people would prefer it to go in News or any other section I will move it there.

Glyphosate is a problem. It destroys bacteria (being an antibiotic it does that sort of thing). It gives rise to glyphosate resistant weeds, so now the next generation has 2,4,5D added. Otherwise known as agent orange, Vietnam should ring some bells.
When the chemicals get mixed they appear to act synergistically, so the effect is more tahn the sum of the parts.
To say glyphosate “isn’t that toxic is playing with words. It is an insidious poison and the world can do without it.

From Wikipedia on agent Orange-
It is a mixture of equal parts of two herbicides, 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D. In addition to its damaging environmental effects, traces of dioxin found in the mixture have caused major health problems for many individuals who were exposed.

Quoted from here.I call it 'decades of deception' - very strategic efforts by Monsanto, others in the agro-chemical industry, to own the science and to discredit anybody who tries to challenge them.
So says Carey Gillam, author of White Wash - The Story of a Week Killer, Cancer and the Corruption of Science.
Could be well worth a read.

Maybe it is toxic?

Re: Glyphosate isn't that toxic afterall!!
This article talks about a new study published in the journal, Environmental Health Perspectives, that has been carried out which finds that glyphosate is very bad for us but Roundup is even worse because of the "adjuvants" added. It adds to the Seralini study which was effectively marginalised by the pesticide industry.

Sooner we get this pernicious poison banned the better.
