At least eight anti-government protesters have been shot dead by Yemeni forces in Sanaa, medics have told the BBC.

They said dozens were wounded when government forces opened fire on a group of protesters gathered near the university, following Friday prayers.

Armed men opened fire from positions on top of nearby buildings, reports said.

Yemeni President’s Ali Abdullah Saleh's 32-year-old iron-fisted rule appeared to be falling apart on Monday as top army generals defected and prominent diplomats resigned.

Yemen's defense minister tried to save Saleh’s regime from collapse by pledging prevent any “coup against democracy.”

And this is /exactly/ what the so-derided doomers like Matt Savinar were saying would happen years ago.

The idea that we could reach the end of the Age of Oil without wars in the Middle East always struck me as hopelessly naive. I know Transitioners always argued, "Even if the world does goes to hell, at least we can say we tried." Which is admirable on one level - but my perception was that the chances of the world NOT going to hell were precisely zero. Human nature would have to change overnight.

I remember people wittering on about the Cold War in the 1980s...this used to puzzle me because even then, it seemed to me that the M.E. were, collectively, more likely war-material. They just seemed a more "absolutist" lot, whereas all the Russians had was an absolutist government, which didn't seem like the same thing.

I'm wishing I bought 8 chickens not 4.....
