I'm Type 1 too. Insulin keeps outside the fridge (ie installed in the pen and carried around) for 28 days. It doesn't like extremes of temperature though. I wonder if a small PV fridge might be worth having later on to ensure the insulin keeps through any extended outage. I worry a little more about...

Now you're getting into impact analysis and proper business continuity planning type principles. Interesting to apply that to a domestic setting. Hurricane Katrina should have taught us one thing - we absolutely need drinkable water first. And here in East Anglia, to get water, we need electricity, ...

Been thinking some more about this while out with the dogs. While food stocks are useful, to work out my priorities I gave some thought to what we need, in roughly what order. Drinking water, warmth, shelter, food, medicine, light, cooking, non-drinking water, transport, communications, entertainmen...

Started preparations on a limited budget

I've started in a modest way on my preparations. Over and above all, mortgage / debt elimination, which will take me some 18 months to achieve. During this period, I've decided to spend ?50 a month on PO preparations. I think I need to be concentrating first on resilience against immediate energy su...

The USAF fielded these weapons years ago. Iirc, they used F-15Cs as the launch vehicle for an ASAT missile, think the missile was manufactured by Vought, a spinoff from the Star Wars program. Sad planespotters like me (I wear my anorak with pride) can even buy this modified F15+missile in model kit ...

Here's an interesting page from the DTI oil and gas website.

When you hear reassuring noises 8) from TPTB, it's time to top up - and fill the jerrycan too!

Saw something on TV this morning about Cameron proposing green taxes on transport, but promising these to be offset by lower taxes / subsidies for families. Only thing is, encouraging families (promoting breeding to put it bluntly) - won't that cause even more problems later? Anyway, it was an aberr...

We are living in a time when the plural is killing the singular. Nothing has real value when everything comes in thousands. 'He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose'. (Anon) :D :D Eh? I think that means I should have invested the ?25 from the ultra-cheap DVD playe...

When I saw this heading, I thought it was going to be about this film: How To Get Ahead In Advertising Completely on-topic for this discussion, and well worth watching if you've not seen it. We had it on our DVD rental just a few weeks ago. I've got a copy that came free with the Sunday Times a whi...

Now that's a positive vision alright. Very succinct too, MrE, thanks. Voluntary simplicity gets more attractive all the time, eh. But enforced simplicity, when its way too late, will be so painful for many. Looking at those ads again, and I think of all that pointless business which depends partly o...

Getting ahead in advertising

I look at the endless TV consumer ads these days, and then I think Peak. Cars, especially SUVs, greenwash from oil companies, car insurance, credit cards, cosmetics (because you're worth it), packaged food, packaged holidays, airlines, the list goes on. Nope, none of that will be around. Will we eve...

Advanced weaponry (with suitable inducements to the people making the purchasing decisions). This already seems to be where most advanced engineering jobs are concentrated these days. Footballers and less talented 'celebs'? Media, TV, radio, especially BBC People with premium skills. Other than that...

It's a good summary - but will the other papers pick it up? What I don't understand is this - PO is inevitable and has staggering implications for the way we live - one read of LATOC and this site, and I instantly got the message. So why aren't the mainstream quality media all over this topic, in th...

Never seen a Playstation. But as a 45 year old without kids, why would I? Now there's a generation gap for you... Anyway, I asked the older generation (my Mum) about the 3 day week. She remembers that politicians exhorted us to save precious electricity by brushing our teeth in the dark. Some wag cl...

Being as I still enjoy some of what this decadent society has to offer, 8) there I was last night, listening to Kerrang channel on the TV - wall to wall rock vids, many from the 70s. Then up come the Sex Pistols, :x hollering 'no future'. (from God Save the Queen ). Seems they were wrong - the (surv...
