I don't really want anything, I've got everything I need at the moment, in terms of physical needs anyway. Perhaps I'll buy myself a vintage spade though. I've recently started buying vintage garden tools as they are a) beautiful, b) feel a lot better in the hand c) seem to be made a lot better so s...

I think it depends on the origin of the conspiracy. In any large accident/catastrophe etc there are always going to be lots of unanswered questions and contradictions. (a couple more of my own - to organise something as big as this and to have only a limited number of open questions is a task far be...

Pirates of the Caribbean (Axis of Hope) - Tariq Ali

Top rant by Tariq Ali. Essential reading for those who think the words "Globalisation" have been stolen by those interested only in "Polarization", Washington Consensus insn't often shortened to W.C. for stupid reasons and neo-liberalism is a nice way of saying "massive scal...

I tried the 1.2 Watt led ones that fit into hallogen light fittings. If I had kept them in for more than a few days (and it was summer) I may have gone into terminal depression. It is better to live in darkness than in the morbid dull cold blue light they give off.

"do a cost benefit analysis~" BECOMES "see if the EROI is positive"

Business jargon..

so we're all a bit fed up of "long hanging fruit" and "squaring the circle" but they won't go away. How about some new ones with an energy twist to get people thinking about energy all the time? So here is the challenge. Firstly we come up with a new set to replace the old and th...

Blackout London

I know some of you aren't in London but you could try this too....go on, just for me. Ok how about for me and you? No? How about me, your family, people living in marginal places on the earth? Maybe other can do it to save nice cuddly polar bears? (don't try cuddling them by the way) Perhaps for oth...

Unless we have a sustained cold snap then I don't think healthy people in this country have much risk of dieing in the winter (if they keep dry). They will be pretty uncomfortable but even when outside temperatures drop below zero, inside, with a jumper and a duvet, most people are fine without heat...

The Weather Makers - Tim Flannery

Almost finished this. Interesting but lacks the background science. And I think if he says "but we'd need to cut our CO2 emissions" one more time I'm going to go mad. Also disappointing that yet another supposedly knowledgeable person is claiming that a) nuclear is CO2 free and b) that it ...

Page 104 Like renewable sources, nuclear fission and fusion are energy sources that emit no CO2 to the atmosphere And another bit which I think gives a summary of the general feel of the book (page 106): The most important role for direct public expenditure in mitigation policy is in government-supp...

Chris So how did you find The Science and Politics of Global Climate Change: A Guide to the Debate I'm over half way through and am finding it pretty rubbish, and am tempted to put it down. It must have spent about 2 pages discussing something about science and the rest implying that we should put o...

Initial problems that we need to think about - holdholds with gas cooking/central heating will find it easier to stay in bottom ranges whilst not being any more energy efficient i.e. would the scheme need to take into account whether the property has gas? Regional variations - are these significant ...
