That is a good idea,

Bees to protect the allotment from the marauding chavs. They vandalize the place at the moment and there isn't even a shortage of food!

If you learn how to, will you train my bees?

I've thought about keeping bees also, the allotment society said I couldn't, which is confusing. Surely gardeners like bees!!! Increased harvests and all that.

Isn't Mead made from honey?

Thanks for that aliwood and newmac, I will look at the RSPB site, didn't think of that. Not sure about the salt solution for the slugs though, doesn't that get into the soil? I've grown food in my garden for the last 2 years and yes I will use beer traps, but It's quite a large allotment so I think ...

I?m hoping for some advice for myself a perhaps others too. With my day off today, I?m planning the use of my allotment for next year. I had it since about August this year so it was too late to make the best use, we grew some winter cabbage, cauliflower and established a Globe Artichoke plant near ...

Beer traps work well for slugs, as has been said. Put a large flat stone protruding from a small bush and you may attract the Thrush which will use the stone to smash snails aginst. Snails are usually abundant where there's slugs. Slugs don't like copper pipes, so surround your allotment with bits o...

12 tonnes  Gutted, there's only 2 of us. Will try a bit harder, need energy efficient bulbs. We have loft insulation but not cavity wall (terranced house wasn't an option either). We are getting rid of one of our cars in the new year. We don't own a freezer and have an energy efficient fridge....

Here's an interesting link I found for this thread:- http://www.beyondpeak.com/drugs-beyondpeak.html If you make your own still, you could make ethanol for transport fuel as well as 'Die-Off Moonshine'! Good link and as for the moonshine, John Seymore's 'Fat of the land' talks a little about ...

Learn to brew a decent beer from hops and malted barley. Its fun and cheap and when it turns out right it is better than the bought stuff. Trade in beer, always gonna be a market for that. The wife can make good wine but grapes may be a problem, trying elderberry next year. Learn to make salami (alt...

Actions speak louder than words. Maybe if you did something to show that you are serious (like start an allotment) and asked for a bit help from your parents? An excellent suggestion, I started an allotment early this year, not only does it give me some exercise, I have met some great people. My fo...

A while ago I told some shareholders and partners about peak oil, I wanted to plan for a difficult business environment. Man that was the wrong thing to do, I was ridiculed, laughed at, told I was crazy so many times I started to believe it. Looking back its no supprise, a public freak out if you wi...

I've got an ear infection right now, I get them too from time to time. I'm trying to see if it will clear itself up, but I've had it a week. If it is worse tomorrow am going to the docs.

Just trying to say, I share your worries on this snow hope.
