The poor state of the pound has certainly been a factor, but what has amazed me over the last fifteen years has been the extraordinary rise in prices in southern Europe. In Spain, prices of everyday things have rocketed, while wages have remained static and low. In Spain and in Greece, it is very di...

I've just been using up some dried pasilla chillies that I bought in a market about 9 years ago. Great. I'm sure they said use by 2005 or something. Some use by dates are made up eg honey: the producer has to put a use by, by law, so sticks any old thing on there, often a random 5 years after it was...

Advice on inputs to water butt

I have been planning on putting in water butt for a while, but there were complications re permission etc. One complication is that one of the inputs to the down pipe to my potential water butt from the (big) roof) is a drain from a bathroom sink (not mine) i.e. grey water. Should I avoid taking wat...

Spains's savings banks are awash with 'assets' consisting of junky land that builders have failed to build anything on. It is worth zero. But Spain's notaries and Spain's bank managers being in league with whoever writes the cheques, it's down in the books as worth quite a bit. Bankia was full of se...

I'd say the figure is largely garbage. (reading below) if had 10 applications running on my computer, 1 of which is the web browser I occasionally check in with, 100% of my computer electricity consumption is attributable to the Internet?? That's clearly nonsense. Etc. etc. ----- http://www.greenaly...

Piano from Philip Glass: Metamorphosis 1 etc. I'd say this has become the almost universal soundtrack of unsettling times and doom on the broadcast media, both radio and TV. The latest to use it is this week's This World with Michael Portillo on Greece and the euro. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il...

The Pirate Bay

Interesting development: the UK Pirate Party is mirroring TPB on it's own IP address.

tpb.pirateparty.org.uk

Given that the court ruling is for blocking IP addresses, we may soon see Pirate Party UK (registered political party) website blocked....

There's a heck of a lot of junk 'food' there. I hate to think what something like 'Crispix' would consist of.
