Looks like a potentially severe drought coming

I am watching the growth of wild plants very carefully (it is my job to do so). They are suffering. A lot of things are frost damaged, a lot of things are late because of the low temperatures, and now they are beginning to suffer from lack of rain. The spring fungi are also in trouble (st george's m...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

And then after everyone has forgotten about the PRESENT pandemic,
Nobody is going to forget the last 12 months in a hurry.

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

So people think that the international travel restrictions are here to stay? Very interesting if true. Will also come as a big shock to Joe and Josephine Public, who are currently expecting everything to get back to normal by next year at the latest. I remain skeptical. I think the government will l...

Re: Greer absolutely nails it....

I once rented a 'four story' house like that in Bristol. The house was built on a slope, with the back yard a full story lower than the road at the front. It had a basement, it was basically a triangular void, steeply sloping earth/rock floor. Not desperately useful for storage as very damp. This b...

Re: Greer absolutely nails it....

Yeah, that's actually a 4-storey house, not that it looks it from the outside. Most of the properties around there seem to have basements. It appears to be the only place in south-west Wales with properties of the sort I've spent most of my life living in, typical of late victorian working class are...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

There seem to be 3 themes running through HMG's mind here: 1. Reality is what we say it is, it's f... all to do with the actuality 2. How much (more £) can we give to our pals before this opportunity has gone 3. Boris likes to wear a lab coat when he's not in hi-viz. I think they're back in "h...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

It will be like the 1950s and going to Blackpool for a day at the seaside once a year. Not just once a year, by the looks of it. My wife (who has posted in this thread) works for the tourism section of Hastings Borough Council. Usually her job is trying to promote the area, to bring more tourists i...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

The disconnect between the UK's 'irreversible' dash for normality and the reality on the ground in Brazil and India is stark. If we don't test, trace and isolate effectively and don't take international travel including mandatory isolation seriously Covid will be back. Personally I think we will pr...

Re: Greer absolutely nails it....

Re: renting for a while. We have come up with a better idea. I have spoken to some agents down there, and it seems that demand for rental properties massively outstrips supply. I think what we're going to do is buy a terraced house in Pembroke Dock. My mother is not going to be with us for very much...

Re: Greer absolutely nails it....

What is to stop a newly educated forager from taking a piece of something edible and planting it elsewhere ? In the garden, park, or just another hedgerow ? Isn't this better than importing a Spanish grown lettuce or fruit from Israel ? i'll admit to a certain amount of transplanting , seed collect...

Re: Greer absolutely nails it....

There are hundreds of edible plants that have fallen out of use because it's easier to have veg shipped half way around the world to Tescos. And some of them are actually stunning. Many people assume that all wild food must somehow be inferior, but the only way much of it is inferior is, as you sug...

Re: Greer absolutely nails it....

The UK population will never feed themselves by foraging, however the spreading of knowledge of long-forgotten edible plants that grow well in our climate must be a good thing. What is to stop a newly educated forager from taking a piece of something edible and planting it elsewhere ? In the garden...
