Re: Tanker "hijacked" of Isle of Wight.

I have since heard an UNCONFIRMED update regarding this event. It was known that a number if migrants were aboard the ship, with the stated intention of landing in England and remaining here. As the ship rounded the Isle of Wight, these migrants allegedly believed that that they were to be put in so...

Re: Peak oil wedding list

The cause of the damp has finally been located. In certain weather conditions, rain was blowing UNDER the end edge of the roof, trickling down the inner face of the gable end wall, and spreading. Only a very little water, but still a nuisance. Rectified by filling in the gaps with sand/cement mix. K...

Re: Urban myths re electricity/fuel/energy/power.

And an old urban myth that has recently resurfaced, repeatedly. "The street lights are connected to my electricity meter, which is unfair" Or the related one in blocks of flats, "Poor old Mrs. ABC has to pay for all the lighting in the common parts, it seems very unfair." Both of...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

I have previously deleted many posts by LJ when these have contained threatening or abusive language.
Others have been edited for similar reasons.

I do not intend any mass deletion posts by LJ.

The odd edit or deletion is still possible if I find an old insult or threat, but no general deleting.

LJ remains a member, so far as I can see, but has not contributed since he said "close this account now" or some similar remark.
I could delete the account but would not do this without the agreement of at least one other admin.

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

I have heard anecdotal reports that deaths from drug abuse have also declined, due to lockdowns reducing availability of recreational drugs.
A lot of drug users obtained supplies from a mate at work or down the pub. Both often closed. Large music festivals also.

Is there any data on this ?

Re: Preps found wanting, or sufficient in current severe weather

One neighbour reports that all was well in the recent severe weather, with the exception of greatly increased propane consumption. .......... Extra cups of tea as well? Instant beef soup I am told. Children have decided that beef soup is "brain food" and that any lack thereof will result ...

Re: Plans for world's first tidal power plant

I wonder if this means that the project will actualy be built ? Or is this simply the go-ahead for another round of studies, consultations, enquiries and nimbyfests in general.

This project or something very similar has been "approved" or "going ahead" for at least seven years.

Re: UK: 2,000 MW of offshore energy by 2020

I agree and do not see a significant future for wave power. Wind power is cheaper and is now a mature technology. Adding wave power does not much help in securing a reliable electricity supply since high winds and strong waves tend to occur at the same time. Tidal power has the merit of not being re...

Re: Switched Reluctance Motors

I have seen switched reluctance motors in industrial use. They are more efficient than standard induction motors, but only by a small margin. A saving of 2% to 3% was claimed by use of a switched reluctance motor in place of a standard induction motor. On a 20 KW motor, this is about 500 watts. For ...

Re: PowerTheft

Stealing telephone service is hard because a number has to be allocated as well as making the physical connection.

Making connections to live power cables is routine for utility staff or subcontractors, and I suspect that most illegal connections are made by serving or ex staff.

Re: Propane shortage ?

I suspect that yurts used by the mongols were a lot smaller than present day UK ones, and also that the people were more used to harsh conditions. My neighbours yurt is spacious, which is about the only positive. Cold, damp, draughty. Purchased on fleabay. Still cold with 9KW of gas heat, and gas li...
